Public Statement on September 29, 2017 by the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Brigadier General Paul Boroh (Rtd.)

Brigadier General Paul Boroh (Rtd.)

On the occasion of the 57th Independence Anniversary of our dear country on Sunday, October 1, 2017, I congratulate all Nigerians. Doubtlessly there have been, and are still a lot of challenges confronting the world today and our country, but I have no doubt that we shall overcome them adequately.
What is desired is for us to emphasize on Dialogue rather than hold Monologues across the country. Conflicts are bound to occur sometimes as a result of misinformation or lack of communication. Whatever the cause(s) the most important thing is that we should adopt the non-violent approach to conflict management including mediation, reconciliation, arbitration and general Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanism.

There is strength in unity and as a united people, we can overcome our Challenges, lead our country on the path of development and fulfill our mission to lead our area of influence, Africa aright. The future is bright and a strong, united and prosperous country has room for all of us. This will also serve us better than if we are splintered which will make us weaker and vulnerable.

Beyond getting our politics right, we must also get our economics right because as we are all aware, oil on which we have so much relied for half a century, is not only a wasting resource but it cannot for long sustain us as the world moves from petroleum to other alternative forms of energy especially in powering vehicles. This is why we should take serious, the emphasis of the President Buhari administration not just on alternative sources of income, but particularly on agriculture.

The Presidential Amnesty Programme has dedicated itself to selling this idea to youths in the Niger Delta Region and we are beginning to see the results as some of them have embraced farming and many Beneficiaries of the Programme are being trained in agriculture and aqua culture.

Permit me to seize this opportunity to thank youths in the Niger Delta for taking the path of peace which is a sure way of attracting investors and ensuring development in the Region. I also thank all Nigerians for supporting the Presidential Amnesty Programme which is a strategic peace building win-win Programme.

At this time, my heart is with our gallant military and security forces that have placed their lives on line in the fight against the Boko Haram terrorists as well as other perpetrators of violent crimes in our dear country. I also identify with the families of our brave combatants who have paid the ultimate price in the war against terror, and our fellow citizens who have been internally displaced by the war against the terrorism.

In conclusion, on behalf of the Presidential Amnesty Programme and the Beneficiaries of the Programme, I thank His Excellency, President Mohammadu Buhari for sustaining the Programme, ensuring its development plans for peace, economic advancement and sustainable development of the Niger Delta Region.

Happy 57th Independence Anniversary to all Nigerians.
