The National Leadership of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide has being receiving several calls and inquiries from Ijaw youths, stakeholders and members of the public relating to a purported IYC election taking place at Okochiri, Okrika Clan,  Rivers State today April 8, 2017 and we wish to categorically state as follows:

  1. The IYC National leadership wishes to call on Ijaw youths and members of the public to completely disregard the purported election been called by some former leaders of the IYC.
  2. The IYC has since the 2nd to 3rd of March, 2017 at BURUTU town, Delta State duly conducted elections into the National Executive Council at the instance of the then President and leader of the council,  Udengs Eradiri
  3. Udengs Eradiri had since handed over the leadership of IYC to Eric Omare as President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) worldwide.
  4. We wish to state clearly that former leaders of IYC have no power whatsoever to call for a convention for the purpose of conducting elections into the IYC National Executive Council. We advise the few IYC former leaders involve to maintain their advisory role rather than assuming executive functions and becoming partisan.
  5. It is also important to alert the reading public to know that whatever that is been planned or happening at Okrika, Rivers State is been done in flagrant disregard of the rule of law. The question of IYC leadership is already a subject of litigation before the Bayelsa State High Court and parties have been asked to maintain the status quo. More specifically on the 31st of March, 2017 when one of the matters came up in court, the Lawyer to those purporting to do election at Okrika made an unequivocal undertaking before His Lordship, Justice Ogola not to go ahead with their purported election until the determination of their preliminary objection and the Plaintiffs’ motion for interlocutory injunction. This is in addition to the strong admonition by the Honourable Justice Umukoro on 23/3/2017 in another matter relating to the IYC Leadership on the need to maintain the status.
  6. The IYC Leadership strongly calls on the relevant security agencies to ensure compliance and respect for the rule of law. We believe in peaceful resolution of whatever disagreement that exists in the IYC but parties must have respect for the Rule of Law and not take Laws into their hands. Nobody no matter his position is above the Laws of the land
  7. Ijaw youths are called upon to completely disregard the purported election at Okrika and go about their normal activities.

Signed for the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC)  worldwide:

Barr.  Henry Iyallah
