As part of events marking the 2017 Ama-Ikiye Festival organized annually by the people of Ofougbene Community in Iduwini Kingdom, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State; Ijaw wrestling champions Opukiri Agala, Soso Taramarau and their supporters have drawn a battle line to meet at the community’s festival.This was contained in a statement issued today at Warri by the duo of Sir, Newman Iyepade Chairman organizing Committee and Comr. John Ogborizi Secretary respectively.

Speaking to journalists, the 2017 organizing secretary of the Festival, Comr. Ogborizi disclosed that Opukiri’s supporters would include Adibo, Amass, Melvin and Nathaniel while that of Champion Soso’s supporters are Agrimony, Babagida, Diboy and Lucky as they have all allegedly vowed to take the day.

In a brief interview with the wrestling champions, they all seems to be speaking in one direction, in their words ” The people of Ofougbene and indeed Iduwini Kingdom will see something, this is not a time for us to brag but the people will sure see something and it will be so interesting”.

However, the community has concluded all arrangements to host the four days high powered festival that would feature the musical performance of Ijaw musicians, Chief Pereama Freetown, Kingsley Takembo with the host of others.

It was further learnt that the festival would officially begin on the 24th of March 2017 that would run up till 27th of this same month being the last day that would feature the big wrestling contest immediately after the dramatic display of Benikpkobiokpo masquerade.

It was gathered that all the days of the festival would be garnished with different events and activities that would keep the audience entertained.

The Executive Chairman of Ofougbene community, Chief Evans E. Etimigba on his part have, however pledged that this year’s festival would be so entertaining as he invites members of the public to the event.

Soso Taramarau

In his words “The Festival would be like no other, considering our preparations towards hosting it and the visible results we have been getting so far, I have no doubt that it would be a superb Festival”

Speaking on the significance of the Festival, Chief Evans reveals that the main idea behind the festival just like the name implies, Ama-Ikiye as an Ijaw word simply means “Remember Home.”

He noted that during the period, indigenes that have for long being away from the community would come home, which will no doubt strengthened the bond of unity more among members of the community.

Alleging that it will also serve as an avenue to showcase the community’s rich cultural heritage to the outside world couple with the massive inflow of people to the community is something that will boost the socio economic life of the town within the said period, as he maintains that the festival is indeed a sacred symbol that manifest as a culture that must be passed from one generation to another.
